San Juan County Detention Center officials in New Mexico have opened an investigation into allegations that jail staff beat an inmate, County Sheriff's deputy Capt. Tim Black said. The Sheriff's Office filed a report March 7 after allegations were raised against the jail officers. However, the investigation has since been turned over to the FBI, Black said. "We did an initial investigation and determined that the allegations were civil rights violations," Black said. "We asked the FBI to take it." FBI spokesman Bill Elwell did not return a phone message and could not be reached for comment last week. County Chief Executive Officer Keith Johns said he was not familiar with the investigation and could not comment. County Administrator of Corrections Tom Havel confirmed there is an open internal investigation into allegations raised against two officers, but refused to reveal their names or what the allegations are against them. "We are taking a look at two employees and we may be taking some administrative action," Havel said. "Right now we have some allegations we are investigating." No action has been taken against the officers as of Friday. |
