A New Jersey inmate found dead in a cell last week at a youth correctional facility was a homicide victim, a Corrections Department spokeswoman said. Spokeswoman Deirdre Fedkenheuer said an autopsy determined that the inmate at the Albert C. Wagner Youth Correctional Facility was strangled. The investigation was continuing and the 47 inmates in the unit where the homicide allegedly occured remained locked down Friday, Fedkenheuer said. The name of the 25-year-old inmate was not released because authorities had not yet reached his next-of-kin, Fedkenheuer said. The medium-security correctional facility houses young male offenders. The homicide was the first in a New Jersey state prison since May 2004, Corrections officials said. |
