The family of a Mississippi inmate who allegedly hanged himself is having a second autopsy performed today to confirm their loved one's cause of death. Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus said an out-of-state physician will perform the autopsy on Jesse Earl Hubbard. It will be done at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula. Marilyn Hubbard, Jesse's wife, said she wanted the second opinion because she doesn't believe the initial report in which forensic pathologist Paul McGarry ruled the death a suicide. Broadus stands behind the findings. Hubbard said her husband of 30 years loved life too much to kill himself. "He wanted to live," she said. "He wasn't depressed at all. He didn't kill himself." Moss Point police arrested the 51-year-old Hubbard the morning of March 4 on misdemeanor charges of public drunk-and-disorderly conduct. Several hours later, Moss Point police said they found Hubbard hanging in his jail cell. The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is conducting an independent probe. The results will be turned over to the Jackson County District Attorney's office to present to a grand jury. The grand jury will decide whether any wrongdoing occurred. Moss Point Police Chief Demetrius Drakeford said he believes the findings will confirm the death was a suicide. Hubbard contacted the NAACP after her husband's death for assistance with an investigation. Curley Clark with the NAACP said his group is moving forward with its probe and interviewing potential witnesses. |
