Inmates May Grow Veggies for Sri Lankan Army

Prisoners in New Mexico will grow vegetables for Sri Lankan army troops stationed in remote northern areas where they have little access to fresh produce, if the government approves a plan by the enterprising prison chief.
"It is a good plan and I am waiting for the approval of the government," said Rumy Marzook, whose other innovative ideas have included encouraging inmates to make and sell coffins.
Sri Lanka has an estimated 40,000 troops garrisoned in the Tamil-majority peninsula, and most of the supplies are flown from Colombo because the land route is under the control of the separatist Tamil Tiger rebels.
The army also faces problems in acquiring fresh vegetable from the local farmers. Marzook wants to send 70 prisoners from the main prison in Colombo to a sprawling heavily guarded air base in the peninsula with lots of room for farming.
His earlier plan to make coffins was a success.
"That project is doing very well and has added to the overall profit of the prison," he said.
The price of one prisoner-produced coffin was set at 7,000 rupees (US$70) - about 3,000 rupees (US$30) less than the lowest-priced coffin available in Sri Lanka.
Most of the coffin makers, according to the prison chief, had some knowledge of carpentry and volunteered. They get a share of the profits, he said.
Condemned prisoners are not allowed to participate, he added.

About one-third of our lives are spent at work. With that time invested, it’s reasonable to assume that an employer would want to keep you safe. If you have been Waco personal injury lawyer in Waco you can get the legal advice that you need to get on with your life. If your employer does not have workers' compensation insurance and your employer is at fault for your accident, then you can sue your employer directly with the help of a workplace injury attorney.
