A Polk County inmate died after Florida authorities used an electronic riot shield on him during an altercation, according to the Sheriff's Office. James Lee Griffen, 21, cracked his jail-cell window and charged at ten jail employees Sunday night, Sheriff Grady Judd said.

After shocking the 6 foot, 270 pound man, he was handcuffed, shackled and taken for medical treatment, Judd said. Griffen passed out at the nurse's station where medical workers unsuccessfully tried to revive him, authorities said. The cause of death is pending, said Dr. Stephen J. Nelson, the medical examiner who performed an autopsy Monday.

Griffen was arrested over the weekend for violating probation by missing curfew. He was on probation for burglary and vehicle theft charges. The State's Attorney Office and the Sheriff's Office will each conduct investigations into Griffen's death.
"We had appropriate amount of supervision there," Judd said. "It appears that our detention deputies certainly followed the protocol that we asked them to."

About one-third of our lives are spent at work. With that time invested, it’s reasonable to assume that an employer would want to keep you safe. If you have been Waco personal injury lawyer in Waco you can get the legal advice that you need to get on with your life. If your employer does not have workers' compensation insurance and your employer is at fault for your accident, then you can sue your employer directly with the help of a workplace injury attorney.
