Massachusetts' Plymouth County jail fired two corrections officers and suspended two others without pay for allowing inmates to tattoo themselves at the facility's print and embroidery shop on Tuesday, according to reports.
Sheriff Joseph McDonald told the newspaper in a written statement that the officers were disciplined for security violations and that he gave his findings to the district attorney's office for possible criminal charges.
The fired officers were identified as Steve Anstatt and Rick Sanphy. Chris Hughes was demoted from his captain's rank and suspended without pay for 40 work days.
David Rose, who reportedly had campaigned for the sheriff during his election, received a 30-day suspension. Calls to the homes of the four officers were not returned. The sheriff also did not return calls seeking comment.
The discovery of a new tattoo on the forearm of an inmate who worked in the print shop sparked an investigation earlier this month, McDonald said. The shop, which produces brochures and other publications for the sheriff's department, was shut down indefinitely two weeks ago.
