North Carolina's Hoke County Sheriff's Office moved three inmates to the Cumberland County Jail on Tuesday morning after learning the prisoners were planning an escape.
The inmates, Larry Virgil, Kelly Stanback, and Avionne Webb, were being held in the Hoke County Jail on charges of first-degree murder. Hoke County Sheriff Hubert Peterkin commended his staff for discovering the plot.
“Our jail is old,” Peterkin said. “With the way it is set up, you really have to be on your toes.”
Since 2003, five inmates have escaped from the Hoke County Jail. The list includes William Barefoot, who escaped Oct. 25, 2004, and eluded searchers for 15 days before he was captured in Gastonia.
Chief Deputy Troy A. McDuffie said the inmates who were planning an escape were moved to Cumberland County because of the seriousness of the charges, as well as crowding concerns in the Hoke County Jail.
Officials learned about the plot early Tuesday morning. McDuffie would not say how the deputies discovered the plan, citing security concerns. Debbie Tanna, spokeswoman for the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office, said it is not unusual to move prisoners from one county jail to another, especially when space and security are issues.
