A former New York corrections officer admitted Thursday that he raped two female inmates, charges that were not announced until he pleaded guilty, left court and was out of the county. David Rohrmiller, 35, pleaded guilty in federal court in Utica to lying to a grand jury, lying to federal authorities and civil rights violations, all related to the rape investigation, authorities said. Rohrmiller, a correction officer at the Troy jail for five years, was released on his own recognizance pending sentencing July 28, according to Craig Minor, a clerk to U.S. District Judge David Hurd. An inmate cannot legally consent to sex with a correction officer. Rohrmiller admitted to third-degree rape charges and faces up to three years in prison when he's sentenced May 4. He will remain free until then. Rensselaer County Sheriff Jack Mahar did not return a call for comment. The sheriff's office, which runs the jail, contacted the FBI to help run the investigation when they obtained information about the alleged rapes, according to a statement released by the sheriff's office. County prosecutors could not supply any details. Rohrmiller was charged with raping a now 23-year-old woman at the jail between March and September 2005. He was also charged with raping a now 29-year-old woman between June and August, court records show. The sheriff's statement referred to Rohrmiller as a former officer, but it was not clear when he stopped working for the department. |
