New York's Elmira Correctional Facility was locked down Sunday after a series of fights among inmates, including one that sent a correction officer to the hospital. A spokeswoman for the state Department of Correctional Services, Linda Foglia, said the lockdown should last four to five days. Some prisoners had cuts and bruises and were treated at the prison. Homemade weapons were involved in each incident, so officers will search for others. The lockdown started Sunday morning after four inmates fought in the mess hall. The correction officer was treated for minor injuries and released. The officer's name was not released. Foglia said eight inmates fought in the prison yard on Saturday, and six fought in the prison field house on Friday. Foglia did not say whether the three incidents were connected. |
