CO's Rally in Texas

About 150 federal prison workers from 10 states gathered outside an El Reno federal prison to voice concerns about staffing shortages.

The workers say staffing shortages are creating hazardous conditions for inmates and workers.

Brian Lowry with the Council of Prison Locals says staffing levels at federal prisons have dropped from a 95 percent level in the mid 1990s to 89 percent in recent years.

Lowry says at some facilities, one correctional officer could be responsible for overseeing as many as 300 to 600 inmates in a housing unit. There are more than one-thousand-350 inmates at the El Reno prison and 333 workers.
