Third Inmate Wrongly Released
By Associated Press
Published: 03/27/2006

The third Texas inmate in less than two months was mistakenly released from the Nueces County Jail with officials this time saying it may have been due to a faulty fax machine. Stephen Forrester Miller, 39, was arrested on drug charges on March 14 and released Saturday after jail officials didn't receive a notice from the state parole board that Miller had violated parole. The error was caught when Miller contacted his parole officer, who asked why Miller was out of jail.
Sheriff Rebecca Stutts told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times a fax machine had just been replaced and may have caused the problem. She said an internal investigation was underway.
Earlier this month, 20-year-old Fred Winterroth was wrongly let out on bond for drug charges before a parole violation was resolved. He was captured six days later.
Jason Garcia, 24, was released from jail Feb. 17 because of a clerical error. He turned himself in after the error was discovered.
