Authorities say an inmate at the Glynn County Detention Center in Georgia apparently killed herself. Glynn County Sheriff Wayne Bennett says a jail officer found 37-year-old Donya Strickland hanging from a bed sheet in her cell last week.
Staff at the jail tried to revive her. Glynn County Coroner Jimmy Durden says she was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Durden says Strickland apparently hanged herself.
The sheriff says Strickland, who was not on suicide watch, was in the cell by herself.
Bennett has begun an investigation into the incident but said it appears all policies and procedures were followed.
Strickland had been jailed since February 4th when Glynn County police arrested her on charges of theft by taking and possession of cocaine. Police Captain Marissa Tindale says she was accused of stealing two handguns from her grandmother's home on St. Simons Island in order to buy crack cocaine.
