Jail Trust Authority Listens to Jailers' Concerns

Nine Texas jailers from the Bryan County Jail attended the Bryan County Jail Trust Authority meeting last week, wanting answers about pay raises and overtime compensation.
Six jailers went to the meeting with a letter to the authority on questions about pay raises and overtime compensation for the jailers. They had to hold their questions until the rescheduled meeting. The board moved into executive session in order to discuss jail personnel. During the session, shift supervisor and spokesman for the jailers, Randy Wallace, was asked to enter the session. Wallace took with him a letter that contained jailer's concerns.
After a two-hour executive session, the Board re-adjourned the meeting and did not comment on anything discussed in the session. Wallace said after the meeting that he couldn't discuss anything said, but that he was happy that the lines of communication were opened with the Jail Authority.
“I think we came a long way in opening up the lines of communication between us and the Board. To this point, the communication has not been good at all. I believe they will look into our concerns and will work them out,” Wallace said.
In addition to pay raises and overtime compensation, the list that Wallace presented to the Board contained 14 items, mostly repairs to mattresses, faucets, cell locks and drains within the jail. Another item on the list was the jailers' desire to have the curtains in the shower stalls shortened so an inmate's torso would be covered and the head and feet exposed.
