Missouri lawyers representing Jefferson County Sheriff Oliver "Glenn" Boyer and others have agreed to pay $30,000 to a woman who claimed she was raped in 2003 by a male inmate who accidentally was placed in her cell at the county jail in Hillsboro. James Ross, 43, of Hillsboro, was charged with sexually assaulting the woman on Oct. 13, 2003, but a Jefferson County judge dismissed the criminal case when the woman did not appear in court to testify. The woman, who is 24, filed a federal lawsuit in St. Louis against Jefferson County; Boyer; Lt. Robert McKlin, commander of the jail; and Kirk Jackson, a jailer. The lawsuit contended that the woman suffered post-traumatic stress disorder, depression and physical injuries after being raped. The woman sought at least $675,000 in damages. The $30,000 settlement represents the approximate cost of defending the case at trial, said John N. Borbonus III, a lawyer representing the county on the case. |
