New Hampshire State Police say Sullivan's Matthew Cannon was being held on one-thousand dollars bail when he decided to try chipping through the jail's cinderblock wall to freedom. Authorities say that like in the movie, "The Shawshank Redemption," Cannon, 29, disposed of the debris bit-by-bit and covered the hole in his cell wall with a sheet of paper. Officials say that Cannon found a piece of metal somewhere in the jail and started pounding and chipping away at the wall with it. But a suspicious officer discovered the plot during a surprise inspection early this week. Now, Cannon is being indicted on a felony charge of attempted escape, which carries a far heavier sentence than the forgery and other charges he was waiting to be tried on. Jail Superintendent Richard Van Wickler says officials are working to make sure the incident isn't repeated. |
