A New York man accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend's apartment, raping and robbing her was charged Tuesday with trying to pay someone to kill the woman to keep her from testifying against him. Angel Lopez, 29, was charged with conspiracy to commit murder and criminal solicitation for trying to arrange the hit from Rikers Island. Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Lopez's plan was stopped by a fellow inmate. Authorities said Lopez broke into the Floral Park apartment of his former girlfriend in November 2005. He then allegedly filled the bathtub with water and threatened to drown her before raping and robbing her. Lopez was arrested, and, while at Rikers Island, he allegedly asked another inmate if he knew anyone who could carry out a murder for hire. The inmate told authorities, and they set up a sting in which an undercover cop posed as the inmate's cousin willing to carry out the hit. The indictment said Lopez agreed to pay $1,000 to have the woman shot to death. |
