A Texas sheriff has ordered a criminal investigation of her own department after six inmates were released by mistake this year. The Nueces County sheriff's office had instituted safeguards this month after five inmates were mistakenly released from the county jail, and another erroneous release was discovered this week. Authorities were searching for the sixth inmate, who was released Friday and had been facing a charge of possessing a controlled substance. "Preliminary information indicates that there may be highly suspicious circumstances surrounding this latest incident," Sheriff Rebecca Stutts said in a statement. |
