At least one female inmate at Utah's Washington County jail is alleging that inappropriate sexual conduct between female convicts and at least two jailers took place. The alleged misconduct happened at the Purgatory Correctional Facility. The investigation began on Thursday March 16 when Hurricane police were called to the jail for an interview with an inmate who brought the allegations. An investigation so far has resulted in the resignation of two corrections officers. The Washington County Sheriff's Department released a statement saying such allegations are taken extremely seriously and “based upon the nature of the allegations; we have taken appropriate personnel action. We have received two resignations.” However, the allegations extend beyond the Purgatory jail. St. George police are also investigating an alleged sexual act in their city involving one of the accused jail officers and a female inmate. “These charges of misconduct have several locations,” said Craig Harding of the St. George Police Department. Police remain tightlipped about the details surrounding the alleged abuse, saying only that the sexual activity was not forced; that all individuals involved were complicit. Officer Harding says the names of those allegedly involved have not been released in order to protect them should the allegations prove false, “I don't want to speculate so much on the misconduct because when somebody puts out an allegation a person gets stuck with that no matter what charges really apply and what don't.” |
