An Ontario County Jail inmate was charged with criminal mischief last week after admitting he tried to pry open a fire sprinkler in his Canadian jail cell because he was angry that he wasn't allowed to make a phone call. Gregory S. Sternberg, 53, admitted he was fiddling with the fire sprinkler with his toothbrush when it became activated, flooding his cell, said Investigator James McCaig. After hearing Sternberg yelling “let me out,” correction officers discovered a large amount of water running out from under Sternberg's cell door and thought it was a water leak, McCaig said. Correction officers called the fire department, but no evidence of a fire was found, he said. Sternberg later admitted what he did and was charged with fourth-degree criminal mischief, McCaig said. Sternberg, who was in jail on a harassment charge, was arraigned before Hopewell Town Justice Margaret Hilton, who set bail at $2,500 cash or $5,000 bond bail. His court date on that charge is April 11. |
