Inmate Clash Leads to Injury, Charges

A fight between two Iowa inmates Wednesday at the Lee County Correctional Center resulted in injury to one of the combatants and an assault charge for the other.

Michael Land, 18, Keokuk, was taken to Fort Madison Hospital and treated for cuts, bruises and abrasions on his forehead, said Lee County Sheriff Buck Jones. He was released and is being held at the jail. Earl York II, 27, Chicago, was charged with aggravated assault and temporarily placed in disciplinary segregation in an observation cell. He since has been released to another cell block.

At 7:55 p.m., an officer monitoring a cell block saw a fight begin, Jones said. The fight was broken up and an investigation ensued. The men were housed with two others in a cell block in the main jail. The other two inmates stayed out of the fight.

The investigation ran into the typical problem in a jail setting, Jones said. No one saw anything and no one knew anything. By looking at the videos, investigators pieced together what happened.

“Land has been agitating York,” Jones said. “From watching the tape, Land locked York in his cell and covered the window so he couldn't see out. York gave him the option of going to his house (cell) and he refused. This is the first time York has had disciplinary problems."
