A South Carolina bill that would allow inmates in minimum security prisons to attend a relative's funeral is heading to a Senate committee. A Senate Corrections and Penology subcommittee passed the bill out Thursday. Inmates could attend the funeral of a parent or someone who served as a parent, sibling, spouse, child, grandparent or grandchild. The Department of Corrections would provide the transportation and could charge the inmate for the service. As amended, the bill would allow the department to deny inmates visitation in some circumstances, if it would jeopardize anyone's safety. |
