Corrections Association of New Zealand president Beven Hanlon, who works as a prison officer, confirmed he had been barred from talking to the media, but said he could not say more than that. Council of Trade Unions (CTU) president Ross Wilson said Hanlon had been sent a letter by the department last week, in which he was told he was not entitled to make any public comment on any matters broader than what Corrections defined as "wage negotiations and industrial matters". "He would be subject to possible summary dismissal if he stepped outside that line," Wilson said. Wilson had met the chief executive of the Corrections Department today but they had not been able to reach an agreement on the issue. "We read the law differently on this matter." Under section 18 of the Employment Relations Act, unions are entitled to represent their members "on all matters in which they have a collective interest as employees". The CTU held that there was an important distinction between Hanlon's situation as an employee of the department and his position as elected president of the union, which gave him a mandate to express the views of union members. |
