| TN jails report mentally ill inmates on the rise |

Tennessee jailers across the state are reporting an increase in mentally ill inmates since cuts were made to TennCare, an expert in the field told the legislature's TennCare Oversight Committee yesterday. "It's potentially a huge problem," said Sita Diehl, executive director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness' state chapter. "Jails are not set up to treat mental illness. They don't have the budget to deal with this population. There's no guarantee they'll get medication or counseling." Meanwhile, Diehl said there has been no increase in the number of mentally ill people who have been hospitalized. Mentally ill inmates in jails face an array of problems, including harassment. Data collected by the Tennessee Department of Mental Health suggests there has been an increase in the number of mentally ill inmates, Diehl said. But she was unable to say how much of an increase because many jails haven't submitted their data yet. The final analysis won't be complete until June, said Diehl, who works closely with the Department of Mental Health. Jail officials from Davidson and Knox counties and Memphis have told Diehl that in addition to housing more mentally ill people, the inmates seem to be more delusional than in the past. There are 13,000 mentally ill people who were cut from TennCare that have not signed up for the so-called "safety net," which offers counseling and limited medications, among other services. Diehl encourages these people to go their local mental health center to sign up. |
