The Sunday "major disturbance" at Ojibway Correctional Facility amounted to a riot, according to the president of the Michigan Corrections Organization, the union representing rank-and-file prison officers across the state. "The officers and staff handled the disturbance professionally, efficiently and courageously," said Tom Tylutki, who visited the prison Tuesday. "I had the opportunity to view the incident, the tape, about a half-dozen times." Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan today affirmed that a fight between inmates triggered the incident. "One group was upset about the way this was handled," said Marlan. "I'll grant you it only lasted 20 seconds. But if (Ojibway Emergency Response Team) wasn't dressed and ready to go somebody would have gotten killed Sunday," said Tylutki. "It was just a lot of things that went very right. If this incident had jumped five minutes earlier it would have been a lot different. In our view that's cutting it too close." While the Department of Corrections has repeatedly denied an officer was stabbed, Tylutki confirmed the serious nature of injuries to prison officers.
