A Wabash Valley Correctional officer was injured by an Indiana inmate Sunday as he was breaking up a fight between two inmates, said public information officer Rich Larsen.
About 9 a.m., a fight began inside a housing unit on the south side of the facility when two inmates began arguing over a chess match, Larsen said. Correctional Officer Paul Bean tried to separate the two when inmate Paul Person, 31, allegedly assaulted him, Larsen said.
Bean was taken to Sullivan County Hospital with a broken jaw and a laceration to his forehead, Larsen said. He later was taken by ambulance to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, he said.
Person and the other inmate, James Cummings, 31, were placed in segregation pending an inside conduct violation charge, Larsen said. Internal affairs may pursue outside criminal charges, he said.
