Jailed Russian tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky has been hospitalized after another prisoner slashed his face while he slept, his lawyer said Saturday.
The attorney, Yury Schmidt, said Khodorkovsky had been assaulted sometime between Thursday night and Friday morning.
Khodorkovsky required stitches and was recovering in the prison's infirmary wing, Schmidt said. He accused prison authorities of trying to cover up the incident.
Khodorkovsky, imprisoned since October, is serving an 8-year sentence for tax evasion and fraud in a Siberian prison camp. His Yukos oil empire was carved up by the state.
The Federal Prison Service said its preliminary information was that Khodorkovsky suffered scratches while arguing with a fellow convict, Russian news agencies reported.
