Another brawl reported at Arkansas prison

Another brawl between black and white inmates has been reported at a state prison in Calico Rock. Officials confirmed yesterday that the fight had taken place. Other major fights on March 21st and 27th left three inmates injured.

One black inmate, 32-year-old Charmorro Williams, lost an eye in the first fight, in which prisoners used padlocks as weapons. Prison spokeswoman Dina Tyler said padlocks were used again Thursday, when five black inmates attacked four white inmates and a Hispanic inmate in a dormitory. There were no serious injuries, but officers in helmets and body armor had to stop the fighting.

Tyler, the spokeswoman, says she believes some inmates may have started the fight as a ploy to be transferred to facilities closer to their families. Prison officials have said the disturbances in March were caused in part by friction between white and black gangs. Prison officials and advocates, as well as inmates, have said that white-supremacist gangs are particularly strong at the prison.

A total of 49 inmates were transferred after the fights last month, but Tyler said no transfers are planned in response to latest problems.
