Alabama police have arrested and charged a 22-year-old man in the shooting death of Onekki Boyd.

The 26-year-old Boyd worked as a corrections officer at the Montgomery County jail. She died Friday from a gunshot wound she received during a robbery attempt at her home on Goldengate Drive.

Police yesterday charged Kertavis Judkins with capital murder in the shooting. A second suspect, an 18-year-old man, also was in custody, but was not immediately charged with the slaying. Montgomery Police Lieutenant Mark Drinkard says investigators believe Judkins and the 18-year-old tried to rob a man visiting Boyd's 17-year-old sister. The incident started outside the home.

Boyd's sister and her one-year-old cousin were present when she was shot. Montgomery County Sheriff D.T. Marshall says jail employees are struggling to cope with Boyd's death. She had worked at the jail for about a year. Boyd leaves behind a 5-year-old daughter.
