An inmate at Indiana's Hamilton County jail awaiting trial on murder and firearm charges was found dead in his cell Saturday in an apparent suicide. According to Hamilton County Sheriff's Major Mark Bowen, Jeremy Shane Black, 20, hanged himself with a piece of his clothing.

Officers were told about a suicide attempt and responded to the cell but found Black unresponsive. Bowen said jail officials rarely are told about such attempts and this is the first one he knows about.

Black had been in the jail since November 2004, and jail officials never reported any behavioral problems. He was in the medium security block, because there were few if any safety concerns.
