A  New York inmate at Broome County Jail was charged with second-degree attempted murder after allegedly stabbing a fellow inmate several times in the face with a pen, blinding the victim in one eye, according to Broome County Sheriff David E. Harder.

Eddie M. Robinson, of Rutherford Street, Binghamton, was arraigned in Town of Dickinson Court on Tuesday and sent back to the jail, deputy jail administrator Kevin J. Moore said.

Robinson, 39, was in jail for third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony, when the incident occurred, Moore said. The inmate was charged with first-degree assault, a felony, as well as the second-degree attempted murder charge, Moore said.

The injured inmate was identified as Eddie L. Brabham, age unknown, of Binghamton, who is in the jail for first-degree criminal nuisance, a felony. He was taken to Lourdes Hospital in Binghamton, treated and returned to the jail, Harder said.

"It was basically a grudge Robinson held against Brabham that led to the repeated stabbing," Harder said. He declined to elaborate on the reason for the grudge, saying his office was investigating the incident.

The incident occurred in Brabham's cell, Harder said. Robinson was accused of bursting into the cell and stabbing Brabham multiple times in the face, Moore said.

Investigators did not immediately say how Robinson obtained the weapon. Robinson was arrested by Corrections Officers Patty Kleinsmith and Kevin France.

Brabham has since been taken to an eye specialist, Harder said. Neither were sentenced prisoners. Both were in jail on pending charges, Harder said. The matter will be turned over to the Broome County District Attorney's Office.
