Ohio prison chief steps down

COLUMBUS, OH - The nation's longest serving prisons chief stepped down Sunday after 15 years on the job.

During his tenure as director of Ohio's Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections, Reginald Wilkinson dealt with the deadly Lucasville Prison riot in 1993. Nine inmates and an officer were killed in 11 days of violence at the prison.

He oversaw 20 executions since Ohio resumed capital punishment in 1999.

When Wilkinson took the helm at the Department of Corrections, Ohio had 7,000 inmates in eight prisons. Today it has 46,000 in 32 prisons.

Wilkinson says his greatest accomplishment is the competent professional staff he is leaving behind. He is leaving to direct a nonprofit group dedicated to bolstering Ohio's economy.
