Officer released in hostage situation

TUCSON, AZ - A male inmate held a female corrections officer hostage in his cell for some six hours Monday night at the Arizona State Prison Complex-Tucson before finally surrendering, authorities said. The officer was uninjured.

Timothy Monk, serving a 97-year prison sentence, took officer Laurel Kennedy hostage with a shank made of a razor and Plexiglas at the medium-security prison's Santa Rita Unit about 4:30 p.m. (MST.)

Monk, 34, demanded a transfer to Montana in exchange for releasing Kennedy, said Bart Graves, a spokesman with the Arizona Department of Corrections.

Instead, Graves said the DOC arranged to have Monk transferred to maximum-security housing at the Arizona State Prison-Florence.

Monk surrendered to prison officials at 10:38 p.m. (MST) and was taken into custody without incident, according to Graves.

He said the DOC will prosecute Monk, who has been incarcerated since 1988 after being convicted of armed robbery, sexual assault, kidnapping, aggravated assault, sexual abuse and first-degree burglary.

Graves said Kennedy joined the DOC for training in November 2005 and was assigned to the Tucson prison in January 2006.

"She has been reunited with her family," Graves said. "Clearly, she has been severely traumatized."

DOC officials said the Santa Rita Unit has 768 inmates and is one of seven units at the prison, which has a population of about 4,000 prisoners.
