Weapons Found at D.C. Jail
By Associated Press
Published: 01/29/2004

The city's Department of Corrections says it has seized 19 homemade weapons and other contraband in the jail's maximum security wing since four inmates were shot last month with a handgun.
According to agency records, the illegal items include homemade knives, a copper pipe and scissors.
Corrections officials tell The Washington Post the hunt for weapons was carried out using new security equipment - including a mobile X-ray machine that enables officers to find weapons hidden in mattresses.
Critics of the city's Corrections Department say the number of weapons seized shows that officers have not been conducting adequate shakedowns and that the security situation is extremely dangerous.
That jail's maximum security area houses about 160 inmates at any given time.
