WEST BOYLSTON, MA - A 35-year-old inmate at the Worcester County House of Correction died after being restrained, according to a published report this weekend. Johnny Walker, of Worcester, was serving a 15-month sentence for assault and battery when he died of cardiac arrest and coronary disease on Tuesday night, officials told the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester. Walker spent Monday night in the hospital after he told officials he suffered a seizure. He was returned to his cell Tuesday. But he acted "bizarrely" in his cell, Deputy Superintendent Jeffrey Turco said, and banged his head against the wall. Correction officers shackled him to a bed and put a helmet on his head. A nurse checked the restraints, and Walker then apparently went into cardiac arrest, Turco said. Officers tried to resuscitate Walker with a defibrillator, Turco said. Walker was brought to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:20 p.m. The Worcester County District Attorney John J. Conte is investigating, according to reports. |
