ANAHEIM, CA - A California lawmaker wants an immediate end to state placement of convicted sex offenders in hotels and motels near Disneyland, a report said Wednesday.

Placing more than 20 high-risk sex offenders near the theme park shows “a total lack of common sense' and is like 'putting the fox in charge of the henhouse,” state Assemblyman Rudy Bermudez, D-Norwalk, charged Tuesday.

Bermudez said he would write Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to demand an immediate end to the practice. Bermudez also accused the state Department of Corrections of shuffling convicted sex offenders every four days to avoid registering them.

Corrections spokeswoman Terry Thornton denied the claim, telling the Los Angeles Times: “It is absolutely not true that we are moving parolees every two to three days. We're not shuffling.”

Thornton said 23 convicted sex offenders had been placed within 11 miles of Disneyland in full compliance with the law.
