A SWAT team surrounded a home in southwest Miami-Dade County (Fla.) where a man was holding his girlfriend hostage, but it was too late, according to police. The Miami-Dade County Corrections Department alerted police early last Sunday that a man under house arrest had removed his electronic anklet. At the same time, police received another call from a relative of the man's girlfriend who said that the man had just shot the woman. Police headed to the Sunset Bay Apartments on 99th Avenue and Southwest 224th Street and were not able to get in the apartment. The SWAT team arrived shortly later, but the man had already shot and killed his girlfriend and turned the gun on himself, according to investigators. Police haven't identified the couple, but some people at the scene who said they worked with the woman told Channel 10 that she was a teacher at Centennial Middle School. Police say the man was under house arrest for armed robbery and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. |
