HOUSTON, TX - One of the two teens charged in the brutal beating of a 17-year-old Hispanic youth in Spring last month was assaulted by two fellow Harris County inmates days after he was jailed, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said Wednesday. David Tuck, described in a police report on an unrelated incident as a skinhead, was punched in the mouth and back of the head on April 27, said Lt. John Martin. On that day, the media reported that Tuck, 18, and Robert Keith Turner, 17, both of Spring, had been charged with aggravated sexual assault in the April 22 attack on the Hispanic youth. Prosecutors said the pair tortured the victim, beat him senseless and kicked a plastic pipe into his rectum, causing internal injuries. At least one of the suspects uttered ethnic slurs during the attack, authorities have said. That report, along with the brutality of the attack, has drawn national attention to the assault as a possible hate crime. On Wednesday, Hector Flores, national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, discussed the spring beating with U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales at a meeting in Washington, D.C., Flores and a Department of Justice spokesman said. Martin said detention officers could not learn what prompted the assault on Tuck, or whether it was related to the attack in Spring. Tuck was attacked shortly after a detention officer told him he was being moved into a segregated jail block, Martin said. Hearing a commotion, detention officers rushed to the cell block. "We observed inmate Tuck standing in front of the cell block door, holding the back of his head with his right hand and holding his mouth with his left hand," a detention officer wrote in a report obtained by the Houston Chronicle. Tuck would not say who had struck him, saying he didn't want more trouble and was being moved to a different cell block anyway, the officer wrote. Sheriff's Office records identified the inmates who attacked Tuck as Christopher McDaniel, 19, who is black, and Joseph Stone, also 19, who is white. McDaniel was being held in jail on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and Stone is accused of aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon. |
