DENVER, CO - Mayor John Hickenlooper selected Denver Sheriff's Department Division Chief William R. Lovingier as the new director of corrections and undersheriff. Lovingier, who served as acting director while the city conducted a nationwide search, fills the seat vacated by Fred J. Oliva who retired in February after 39 years service. Hickenlooper selected Lovingier after interviewing three finalists. "After evaluating qualified candidates from around the country, we determined the best person for the job was already right here," Hickenlooper said. "Bill Lovingier's vast experience with the Denver Sheriff Department in a multitude of roles will be a tremendous asset as we implement a new computerized data management system for the jail and transition to the new Justice Center." In 28 years with the sheriff's department, Lovingier worked his way up the ranks from deputy to sergeant to operations caption and operations major to division chief. As director of corrections, Lovingier will manage Colorado's third largest criminal justice agency with more than 800 personnel. It operates two jails, security detail for the district and county court systems, transports state inmates and has extradition duties. It also has a community corrections facility and is in charge of security at Denver Health Medical Center. Lovingier served as a councilman in Black Hawk from 1987 to 1996. He currently is a board member for the Denver Sheriff's Orphan's Fund, has been an organizer and participant in the Special Olympics Torch Run, and has participated in many local charity events. He received an associate degree in criminal justice from Red Rocks Community College, bachelor degree in criminal justice from Regis University, and holds numerous specialized training certifications from local, state and federal organizations. |
