RALEIGH, NC - The House gave unanimous approval Thursday to spend $15 million to help the Department of Correction handle higher than expected medical and energy costs for the rest of the fiscal year. Medical and prison utilities costs are $19.3 million over what the budget set aside, said Rep. Phil Haire, D-Jackson, a co-chairman of the House budget-writing committee overseeing public safety. Unused money from department salaries will help narrow the rest of the shortfall, Haire said. "Just like we ourselves do not know what our medical expenses will be in the next five months, the Department of Correction doesn't know what its medical expenses will be," said Rep. Joe Kiser, R-Lincoln, another subcommittee co-chairman. "We have an obligation to take care of it." The bill, approved by a vote of 114-0 after little debate, now goes to the Senate for consideration. |
