A former N.J. corrections officer at a women's prison was convicted of official misconduct for taking nude pictures of an inmate in her jail cell in 2002, but was exonerated of sexual assault charges against two inmates. Ralph W. Grier, 50, of Trenton, became the third officer from the Edna Mahon Correctional Facility in three years to be convicted of official misconduct charges related to improper sexual conduct with inmates. After the charges against Grier came to light in February 2002, prison officials hired federal corrections experts to help examine the problems at Edna Mahan, located in Union Township, Hunterdon County, and to develop new training programs for officers. Grier, who had been a supervisor at the prison, faces a five- to 10-year state prison term when he is sentenced in March on the second-degree official misconduct charge. Despite the conviction, Grier said he was relieved he was not found guilty on the other charges of sexual assault, which could have meant a much longer prison term. Assistant Hunterdon County Prosecutor Dawn Solari said she was satisfied with the verdict because it means Grier will serve time in state prison and be barred from working in law enforcement again. |
