DEER LODGE, MT - The Montana State Prison correctional officer who shot a man on prison grounds last Thursday was justified in firing his weapon, prison officials said Tuesday. Warden Mike Mahoney said an administrative review concluded that officer Nick Carter's actions were appropriate and consistent with the Department of Corrections policy on use of force. Authorities say Carter, 48, shot Ron Violette after Violette drove onto prison property, rammed Carter's vehicle, then managed to pin Carter between his own vehicle and Violette's. Carter sustained a knee injury during the incident. Mahoney says Carter will return to work as soon as he's cleared by his doctor. Violette, 47, was shot in the elbow and underwent surgery. He is charged with attempted murder, two counts of felony criminal endangerment, felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor criminal trespass. His arraignment is scheduled for May 25. |
