BORDENTOWN, NJ - A melee at a state-run juvenile jail in Bordentown resulted in injuries to three youths and a corrections officer, a lockdown of the facility and nearly a dozen of the aggressors being shipped off to adult prisons, an official said yesterday.

The incident at the Juvenile Medium Security Facility occurred at 1:30 p.m. Monday and was described by a law enforcement source as a "riot" and may have been gang-related.

However, Howard Beyer, executive director of the Juvenile Justice Commission, which runs the facility, said it was a serious fight that was quickly quelled.

"I want to clearly state that I do not consider it a riot," Beyer said. Rather, he described the incident as "a concern that warranted a very controlled response."

Beyer also praised the corrections officers and staffers for their professionalism in ending the brawl, in which desks and chairs were tossed around a classroom.
Beyer said between 25 and 30 males were moving from a gym period to a classroom period when some began fighting as they reached the classroom.

According to preliminary reports, Beyer said, the fight could have been "somewhat planned, but not sophisticated." He said many of those involved may have been followers who were caught up in the action once the melee started.
"Chairs were thrown, desks were thrown...and within minutes corrections officers and supervisors had quelled it," Beyer said. "Within minutes they had separated the combatants. They did an absolutely incredible job."

The fight injured four, including a corrections officer who broke a finger.
"The injuries were nothing of a serious magnitude," Beyer said. "There were no weapons involved, no handmade knives or shanks, and it didn't get out of control."
