CRANSTON, RI - Concerns over fire safety at the state prison in Cranston. Cranston firefighters say they're unhappy that officers at the Adult Correctional Institutions don't have air tanks in the event of a fire. The firefighters say it's important that prison staff accompany them during a fire. The firefighters aren't trained in evacuating prisoners and don't have a way to open the gates. The prison used to provide the air tanks and masks, but stopped doing so because of a change in federal work safety regulations. Corrections Department official Jake Gadsden says he believes a prison officers can still escort a firefighter even without the breathing devices. He says the department is committed to fire safety. |
