| Brazil prison riot leaves one inmate dead |

Inmates rioted after police foiled an escape attempt from a Sao Paulo, Brazil jail, with one prisoner killed and six wounded in the six-hour uprising, authorities said. The riot began at 4 a.m. at the Pinheiros Prison Complex in Sao Paulo, the Sao Paulo State Public Safety Department said. The department said two of the injured were in serious condition and no hostages were taken. It gave no further information. News reports said the some of the inmates were armed and that the rebellion ended after riot troopers entered the prison. The Public Safety department would not comment on the reports. |
