PALMETTO, FL - An inmate at the Manatee County jail was killed Thursday when he jumped from a second-floor balcony and struck his head on the ground, authorities said.

The inmate, identified as Glenn J. Bivens, 44, had been in the jail since his arrest Saturday night on charges that he tried to pull a gun on a deputy after a traffic stop.

Authorities said Bivens, who gave his home address as Vero Beach, struggled with an officer in the parking lot of the Budget Inn in the 8100 block of North Tamiami Trail. He reportedly said he didn't want to return to prison before fighting with deputies.

A loaded handgun fell from his waistband during the scuffle, authorities said.

Bivens reportedly said he would have shot the deputies if he could have drawn his gun, according to sheriff's reports.

Deputies also arrested Bivens on charges that included possession of cocaine and oxycodone with the intent to distribute the drugs.
