PA honors corrections officials

The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections honored 16 employees for their outstanding performances and heroic deeds on Wednesday, May 10, during its annual employee recognition ceremony at the Elizabethtown Training Academy.

Individuals from the following facilities received awards:  Albion and the Erie Community Corrections Center (Erie County); Camp Hill and the DOC's Central Office (Cumberland County); Cresson (Cambria County); Graterford (Montgomery County); Huntingdon (Huntingdon County); Laurel Highlands (Somerset County);  Mahanoy (Schuylkill County); Mercer (Mercer County);  Muncy (Lycoming County); Pine Grove (Indiana County); Retreat (Luzerne County); and Waymart (Wayne County).

Two employees were posthumously awarded DOC Medals of Valor.  One is SCI Huntingdon Officer Stephen Heiss, who was killed in 2005 while at a private veteran's fellowship hall in Altoona.  The other is SCI Waymart Officer George Pugliese, who was killed while on active military duty in Iraq.  Pugliese was the first Commonwealth employee to give his life in defense of his country.
