SUFFIELD, CT - The MacDougall-Walker Correctional Institution will remain on lockdown status indefinitely as officials investigate the assault on two correction officers by a pair of inmates, Correction Department officials said.
The inmates, whose names aren't being released, attacked the officers on Sunday about 9:30 p.m. Both officers, a male and a female, were transported to Hartford Hospital. The male was treated and released, but the female remained in the hospital this morning, said Brian Garnett, a Correction Department spokesman.
The prisoners who committed the assault were transported to the maximum-security Northern Correctional Institution in Somers. This facility is the state's most restrictive prison, managing inmates who have demonstrated an inability to adjust to confinement, according to the Correction Department's Web site.
While Garnett released few details about the inmates involved in the incident, he did say one of them had been serving a 75-year sentence while the other had been serving an 80-year sentence. He refused to say what the inmates were serving time for.
Garnett said criminal charges are expected to be filed against the inmates in connection with the assault on the correction officers.
He said the prison will remain on lockdown status while both the state police and the Correction Department investigate the incident. The lockdown status is a precautionary measure that confines inmates to their cells and limits movements within the institution.
MacDougall-Walker is the state's largest correctional facility, with 2,120 inmates as of last July.
The prison, which is on 140 acres in southern Suffield, is for adult males.
According to the Department of Correction's Web site, the facility "provides a highly structured environment to manage chronic discipline, long-term sentenced offenders, pre-trial protective custody, high-bond offenders, close monitoring and protective custody offenders with programs to address the needs of each population." The prison currently has 678 staff members, according to the Web site.
