Inmate killed

An inmate who ignored orders to stop stabbing another prisoner was shot to death by a correctional officer on Tuesday, officials at the Corcoran Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and Prison said.

Inmates Lawrence Alvarado and Jose Garcia attacked Ricardo Acosta in the prison's maximum security housing unit with homemade weapons, refusing to pull back when ordered by officers or when targeted by foam rounds, officials said.

Alvarado, 24, was then hit with a rifle shot, and taken to a community hospital. He died about an hour later.

He'd been transferred from Orange County in November to serve a 40-year-to-life sentence for second degree murder.

Garcia, 26, continued the attack until officers with batons and pepper spray pulled him off Acosta. He's not hurt, and will continue serving his 118-year sentence for five counts of attempted first-degree murder.

Acosta, 28, is in a stable condition in a hospital, being treated for multiple stab wounds. He came from Los Angeles County to serve 17 years for voluntary manslaughter.

Staff at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran is investigating the incident together with the California Department of Corrections and the Kings County District Attorney's Office.

The officer who shot the inmate, whose name was not released, will remain on paid administrative leave until the case is closed.

This facility is one of two in Corcoran. It provides drug treatment and houses 7,400 medium- and maximum-security prisoners.
