Criminal indictments were announced last Wednesday surrounding a deputy and the death of an inmate at San Joaquin County (Calif.) Jail last year. Mondez Denmon was brought to the San Joaquin County Jail Sept. 5, 2003, on a charge of beating up his girlfriend. Seven hours later, he was dead. The official cause of death was asphyxiation. A San Joaquin County public criminal Grand Jury has heard testimony surrounding the circumstances of the death. Testimony showed that Denmon was restrained on a pallet with leather restraints and broke free. It also showed that he was punched and one officer had stood on his back, which may have caused him to stop breathing. Retired Deputy Sheriff Bruce Thrasher has been charged with battery, and Correctional Officer Gregory Fuher was charged with unnecessarily assaulting or beating any person under color of authority. Tears flowed freely last Wednesday after Denmon's family heard the announcement. Four officers were originally placed on administrative leave. The sheriff's department has already undertaken additional training procedures, and will also use a video camera to record similar events. And the sheriff will continue his own investigation into Denmon's death, which could lead to suspensions or firings of other officers. The civil grand jury also sat in on the hearing, which may result in a report as to jail conditions. Thrasher and Fuher have been released on their own recognizance pending their Feb. 24, 2004, court date. Fuher and two others will remain on administrative leave pending the conclusion of a sheriff's department internal affairs investigation. |
