PALM BEACH, FL - A Palm Beach County sheriff's corrections officer described as "quiet and respectful" killed himself Friday morning while sitting in his car near the county jail, a sheriff's spokesman said.
His death came two hours after a search warrant was served at his Port St. Lucie home as part of child pornography investigation, according to a Martin County sheriff's spokeswoman.
Anthony Caporrino, 46, committed suicide in his personal vehicle at about 9 a.m. at Lake Lytal Park in suburban West Palm Beach, said Paul Miller, Palm Beach County sheriff's spokesman.
"People in the agency that knew him are shocked," said Miller, adding that Caporrino's co-workers described him as "well-liked, quiet, respectful and a well-above-average employee."
"It's an unfortunate situation where someone who worked here has committed suicide," he said. "It's clear from the investigation we're dealing with a suicide."
Neither Port St. Lucie police nor Palm Beach County sheriff's officials would comment on a possible connection between the search warrant and Caporrino's suicide. No one answered phone calls seeking comment Friday evening at Caporrino's home.
While she did not release his name, Martin County sheriff's Lt. Jenell Atlas said the corrections officer's home was searched at about 7 a.m. Martin County sheriff's Detective Brian Broughton, who is part of a task force on Internet pornography, identified the Port St. Lucie address as a possible source for child pornography on the Internet, Atlas said.
The search warrant was obtained by Port St. Lucie police, whose officers served it on the residence. Officer Rob Vega, a police spokesman, said he could release no further information Friday, including the address of the home that was searched or names of people involved.
Police also refused to release the search warrant Friday.
"It's still under investigation," Vega said Friday afternoon. "There's still a lot of work for them to do. It's still a very new investigation."
A computer and some CDs were seized and will be examined, Atlas said. At the home were a mother and her 19-year-old and 13-year-old sons. No one was arrested, and no suspects have been identified, Atlas said.
